How to Choose: Face Toners for Men

Skin care experts recommend a minimum of a three-step skin care regimen for guys.

Two of the three steps are well-known, which are cleansing and moisturizing.

It's the middle step in a regimen that eludes most guys: toning.

Toning is the process of re-balancing your skin's pH to help regulate your skin's production of natural oils. It can help you have a healthy complexion, and it can also improve the effectiveness of other products that you apply during a daily skin care routine.

An example of a face toner is the Willow Toner with Black Willow Bark from Portland General Store:

There are some good benefits for guys to use a face toner - but deciding which one to choose can be difficult.

This guide to face toners for men takes the guesswork out of how to choose a face toner for men to help you select the right one for your face.

How to Choose a Face Toner for Men

A strategy that you can use to choose the right face toner for you is to first identify what type of skin type you have - and then choose a toner based on that skin type.

Oily Skin

When you suffer from frequent acne breakouts, have enlarged pores, and frequently end up with a greasy shine on your face, you have oily skin and need to take steps to reduce oil production and purify your pores.

A clarifying facial toner or an astringent with pore refining properties will help to cut through excess oils and minimize the size of your pores.

Just be careful not to buy a toner or astringent that has alcohol as its first ingredient, as these products are often too harsh.

Formulas with witch hazel can be especially beneficial for guys with oilier skin.

Dry Skin

If your skin gets rough, flaky, or red - or tends to feel tight after you wash it - you're probably a dry-skin type.

When you tone your complexion, you want to restore your complexion to the right pH level without exposing your complexion to ingredients that will dehydrate it.

A hydrating facial mist toner is an excellent choice for dry complexions.

These products refresh the skin to calm redness, soften roughness, and hydrate the tissue while helping to encourage oil production by balancing your skin's pH.

Sensitive Skin

Note: if you have sensitive skin (or aren't sure if you do), please don't test out any grooming products before consulting with your dermatologist or doctor first.

Guys with sensitive skin often develop rashes, redness, itching, or stinging when their complexions are exposed to certain ingredients. If this sounds like you, you'll want to choose a facial toner that is extra gentle to the complexion.

Hydrating facial mist toners like the ones recommended for dry skin types are a good option for sensitive complexions.

Just be sure that you select one that's hypoallergenic or dermatologist-tested for allergy safety.

A formula with anti-inflammatory ingredients like aloe or chamomile can help to keep troubled skin calm.

Normal Skin

If you don't fit into any of the above categories, you've got what's known as normal skin. This means your skin already produces the right amount of oil to keep the tissue lubricated without it becoming greasy, and you want a toner that will keep it that way.

You're fortunate enough to be able to choose almost any facial toner on the market, but steer clear of astringents, as they could potentially over dry your complexion.

For best results, use your facial toner twice every day right after you wash your face. Then, you can apply any treatments or serums that you want to use and then finish your skin care regimen with a moisturizer.
