How to Choose: Hair Products for Men with Kinky Hair
Curly Hair Types: Kinky Vs. Wavy Vs. Curly
Not sure if you “kinky” hair? Not a problem.
Men’s hair expert Rogelio Samson created the popular ISEZ hair type guide and method which describes the different types of hair – including the different curly hair types.
Using Regelio’s method, here's a look at the 3 curly-hair types so you can figure out which type you have:
Kinky Hair
Kinky hair is very tightly curled - so tightly, in fact, that it's hard to see where one curl ends and the next begins from a distance. Only when you begin to run your fingers through it and separate it can you see the separation of the strands.
Wavy Hair
Wavy hair is loosely curled with subtler waves and very distinct strands. Waves have an "S" shape that makes them easy to distinguish from other hair types.
Coiled Hair
Coiled hair falls somewhere between kinky and wavy hair in terms of the tightness of the curls. Loopy ringlets and coils are evident in coiled hair and will have a spiraled shape similar to the way the letter "E" looks when written in cursive.
How to Choose Shampoo for Men with Kinky Hair
Kinky hair is very prone to dryness, so you need to be careful when you're choosing a men's shampoo to cleanse it.
The wrong shampoo can end up stripping away the natural oils that keep kinky hair hydrated, making it very prone to frizz and at risk for breakage.
That's why a good shampoo for kinky hair is a moisturizing formula that will add hydration when you wash to make up for the loss of scalp oils that often happens when you cleanse.
Guys with kinky hair should aim to shampoo only 3 to 4 times per week, and if your hair is already showing signs of breakage, pick a gentle sulfate-free formula.
How to Choose Conditioner for Men with Kinky Hair
Because kinky hair can become easily dehydrated, conditioning is a crucial part of caring for it.
Every time you shampoo, you should follow up with a rinse-out moisturizing conditioner. Whether or not you wash your hair, you should apply a leave-in conditioner to further moisturize your tresses.
Then, on a weekly or semi-weekly basis, use a deep conditioning treatment to fully meet your hair's moisture needs.
Hair Care & Styling Tips for Men with Kinky Hair
When you're styling kinky hair, you need to be prepared for knots and tangles. Trying to comb through them without any styling aids can end up causing damage, so be sure to apply either a hair oil or de-tangler before using a wide-toothed comb to remove knots.
It's usually best to let kinky hair air dry but if you can't wait, be certain to apply a heat protector to your locks before you expose them to heat.
