How to Choose: Hair Products for Men with Curly Hair

Types of Curly Hair

Before you begin to consider which hair products to choose for your curly hair, it's important to understand that curly hair can fall into 3 different texture categories – wavy hair, coiled hair, and kinky hair.

(Men's hair expert Rogelio Samson created the ISEZ hair type guide and method, which includes these three curly hair types.)

There are some differences between the right methods for washing, conditioning, and styling each of the three curly hair types.

Here is more information on the 3 curly hair types:

Wavy Hair

Wavy Hair

Wavy hair forms "S" shapes as it grows and has a very loose curl pattern and the least amount of volume.

If you have wavy hair, you can also check out our guide on how to choose hair products for men with wavy hair.

Coiled Hair

Coiled Hair

Coiled hair forms cursive "E" shapes as it grows and has a tighter curl pattern with a moderate amount of volume.

If you have coiled hair, you can also read our guide on how to choose hair products for men with coiled hair.

Kinky Hair

Kinky Hair

Kinky hair has a very tight curl pattern with little distinction between the strands when viewed from afar. It has the most volume of the three types.

If you have kinky hair, you can also check out our guide on how to choose hair products for men with kinky hair.

How to Choose Shampoo for Men with Curly Hair

Curly hair's texture can make it prone to dryness, so it's important to choose shampoos that wash in moisture.

Hydrating or moisturizing shampoos that contain oils, glycerin, and other moisture-rich ingredients can remove dirt and impurities without stripping away the hydration that your curls need to remain soft and manageable.

An example of a shampoo that you might want to check out is the Daily Strengthening Shampoo from Brickell:

How to Choose Conditioner for Men with Curly Hair

Conditioning is essential for maintaining hydration levels with curly hair.

Use a daily moisturizing rinse-out conditioner after every shampoo, and if you shower some days without shampooing, apply and rinse out the conditioner.

For added moisture, you can apply a leave-in conditioner for curly hair after you have washed and conditioned or on days when you don't wet your hair.

If frizz and breakage are a problem, apply a moisturizing deep conditioner once per week or every other week.

How to Choose Hair Styling Products for Men with Curly Hair

Styling aids can make it much easier to shape curls, create desired hairstyles and keep your curls in place until the end of the day.

Some products that you can choose include:

Curl-Enhancing Styling Gels

Curl enhancing styling gels can be used to sculpt curls and perfect their pattern, to amplify their shine and get a high degree of stiff hold.

Pomades

Pomades work for curly hairstyles that you create with the help of a comb. The products typically leave behind a natural to shiny finish.

An example of a pomade is the Classic Hair Pomade from Brooklyn Grooming:

Styling Creams

Styling creams moisturize curls and reduce frizz to increase manageability. Most styling creams offer light hold, though some are strictly used for hydration and easing frizz.
