Doorstep Dapperness Spotlight: Sock Club | An Interview with Co-Founder Dane Jensen

Launched in 2012, Sock Club is an Austin-based sock subscription company that delivers fine American-made socks on a monthly basis.

In this interview, co-founder Dane Jensen shares how Sock Club got started, what makes the company unique, his #1 sock-related tip, and more.

And there's a nice little surprise waiting for you at the end too. :)

What's the story behind Sock Club, and what motivated you to start the business?

Dane: For me, well-designed and colorful socks were a way to stand out and feel special without being too loud. Great socks added something extra to any regular outfit that wouldn’t go unnoticed. I know Noah [Sock Club's other co-founder] feels the same way.

At the time Sock Club was started, both Noah and I worked desk jobs where the only personality we could bring to work was our socks. I pitched the idea of Sock Club to Noah over a game of corn hole.

As I remember it, I was destroying Noah and to bring up his spirits I told of a new business idea I had. Earlier that week I had read a Forbes article about successful small businesses, one of which was a sock subscription service.

The sock subscription company in the article only sent out black socks. I thought everything about the company was amazing – except the socks.

I told Noah, “You might not be very good at corn hole, but I think you’d make a great businessman.” We decided that day to share our love for socks with the world.

What are the major pain points that you're aiming to solve with your business?

Dane: We don’t see ourselves in the business of solving pain points.

We’re trying to build a service that brings joy to people.  We want our customers to get excited for the surprise of a different sock every month.

What are the main benefits of being a Sock Club customer?

Dane: Most of our customers are giving the sock subscription as a gift.  Every sock comes with a letter that has room for a gift message.

The benefit for the giver is an easy experience to give a very personalized gift.  The benefit for the gift receiver is they get a surprise every month and are reminded of someone close to them.

It’s connecting people with physical items where the power of Sock Club comes from.

What makes Sock Club different than the other sock subscriptions out there? If someone was looking to sign up for a sock subscription, what are the reasons they should sign up for Sock Club?

Dane: Sock Club ships only American-made socks. We gift wrap every sock in tissue paper and wax seal it. Every sock also includes a letter with a personalized message from the giver.

In short, we strive to make every part of the Sock Club experience best in class.

What is the biggest misconception that guys have about socks?

Dane: That you can get away with wearing boring white socks and no one will notice.

Are there any "rules" when it comes to guys and socks? For example, should we try to match our socks with what we're wearing?

Dane: The rules are there are no rules. Socks are a great vehicle for personal expression.

And what is the #1 fashion & style-related issue you think guys struggle with?

Dane: Expressing their individuality.

If you could give our readers just one sock-related tip, what would it be?

Dane: You gotta wear socks or your feet and shoes get smelly. No one wants that.

How can our readers learn more about what you're up to and connect with you online?

Dane: You can connect with us on our website www.SockClub.com or on Instagram at https://instagram.com/sockclubofficial/.
